GRAVITY AND GRACE – SIX EVENINGS IN DANCE
17–22 NOVEMBER 2009
DAGHDHA SPACE, LIMERICK

Great success with Gravity and Grace!

The six nights in dance at Daghdha Space was a resounding success with strong performances and audiences throughout. It was a pleasure to present Laura and Mark performing Standing in Ink on the Tuesday and Wednesday. This was followed by an energetic evening with God’s Dancehall in collaboration with the Garvey Centre and the DMP. This is a format to be explored. It was a treat to bring back Mamuska Limerick on the Friday! The dance installation Nothing Fields on Saturday and Sunday perfectly complimented Daghdha Space with performances by Angie, Ellen, Mark and Lucy – thank you to everyone who braved the terrible weather throughout!
DAGHDHA 2009: 21, DANCING DIFFERENTLY

Over the last six years we have created a unique dance company. This process has been guided by a team of deeply committed artists, dedicated to re-imagining their own practice in dance and choreography in response to the challenges our whole society is currently facing.

We at Daghdha are rightly proud of our achievements. In the heart of Limerick’s city centre we have created one of the world’s most inspiring and beautiful spaces for contemporary dance: Daghdha Space, St. John’s Church. We have been building a contemporary repertoire of the highest artistic standing and 1000’s of photographs document well over 100 unique events that have taken place over the years. We have provided the birthing place for new and internationally acclaimed cultural formats for dance and choreography such as: Mamuska Nights, Framemakers and Salon Du Chat. Two books have been published out of rigorously re-thinking choreography and the current cultural situation. Already, a truly diverse audience, of all abilities and backgrounds, has gathered and danced regularly around the activities offered by Daghdha.

Over the years, the stimulating environment at Daghdha has attracted a community of artists to stay and make their living in Limerick. At the same time, many distinguished artists, choreographers and thinkers have spent time with us, and our programme for emerging artists (DMP) has given a new generation time and space to deepen their own practice.

This year’s funding cuts have caused us to overhaul and streamline the company’s structure and priorities. In the foreseeable future, we will focus on the further development of our “living” repertoire, the Daghdha Mentoring Programme as well as on a number of smaller programmes such as the Daghdha/Garvey Initiative, aimed at meaningful artistic exchanges with adults with special needs. A short-term residency programme for Irish choreographers will also be available.

Dancing differently at 21 years of age, we are excited to bring the fruits of our labour to further national and international attention.
